The New Year and New Term have got off to a busy and exciting start. We have welcomed Miss Burnell to the team and she is busy getting to know the children and Chagford. The children have been telling us about the exciting things that they got up to over the holidays and are trying hard to keep their New Year Resolutions – hopefully you’ve noticed them trying to argue less with their siblings, helping more at home, reading more, keeping fit, eating fewer sweets….
We’ve started our new book in literacy – Oliver and the Seawigs – what a Seawig is will be revealed. We’re also starting our work on Coasts – do see the Newsletter below for more information. Tomorrow Clare Barker the author will visit us as part of our involvement in the Chagword Festival this year. There should be a text message telling you how children can purchase her books tomorrow.
Next week on Wednesday afternoon Ms Rowe will be returning to school to work with the band, choir and all the children in singing practice.
Wishing you all a Happy New Year
Dear parents and carers of pupils in Oak Class (Year 4 and 5),
Happy New Year! We hope you’ve all had a wonderful break and are rested and refreshed.
We are going to start the New Year with a topic on Coasts; this geography work will link to our literacy book – Oliver and the Seawigs as well as work in DT/art, computing, French and science. Please see the curriculum jigsaw for more information. We hope to organise a trip to the coast later in the term.
Maths and spelling homework will be set on a Thursday to be handed in by Wednesday morning. Weekly spelling tests will be carried out on Wednesday as well.
Literacy and Topic work may be set in addition to the regular Maths and spelling work.
We expect the children to read for at least 15 minutes every night.
We do ask that you support your child with their homework and please do let us know if you are experiencing difficulties.
Miss Philpott will be teaching all day Monday and Tuesday and on Wednesday afternoon and Miss Burnell will be teaching Wednesday morning and all day Thursday and Friday. Mr Dray will provide TA support on Mondays and Wednesdays and Mrs B Rowe on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
Due to the continuing demolition of the old school building, there is a limited space on the playground at present. This means that Oak and Birch classes (Years 4, 5 and 6) are having a later playtime than has previously been the case. We hope that by half term we will be able to return to one break time for all children.
There will be PE sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays, please ensure that your child is properly equipped for these lessons.
We would like to take this opportunity to remind you of our school uniform:
Grey or black skirt (knee length) or green and white checked dress
Grey or black trousers or shorts
White shirt (or polo shirt) with collar
School jumper, cardigan or fleece with school logo
White, grey or black socks (plain) / grey or black tights (plain)
Sensible black or brown shoes – (not trainers)
No jewellery, nail varnish or make up should be worn and hair should always be tied up with a simple hair band or grip.
PE kit is navy blue shorts or track suit bottoms, a navy blue polo shirt with green school logo and trainers. Pumps are useful for indoor PE sessions. If the weather is very wet or snowy a change of shoes is essential.
Children should have a named water bottle in school (this needs to be brought home regularly and cleaned out). The children have all been given a pencil case to keep their stationery equipment in and we are encouraging them to take responsibility for their possessions. They may bring in an additional small, named pencil case if they would like to. They should not bring into school anything that is precious to them.
