This week the Grasshoppers have come back to school full of enthusiasm for what we are going to be learning next. Everyone has worked hard and made the most of their learning time. We have also supported each other effectively as a team. Well done everyone! Our only disappointment was that the travel agents had disappeared. They have relocated to Hawaii; lucky them!

In literacy this week we have been looking at different non-fiction genres and have written instructions, non-chronological reports and recounts. Non-fiction will continue to be our main focus next week when we shall link our writing with work in Science, History and with our celebration of World Book Day. Don’t forget to enjoy dressing up on Thursday as a book character!  In phonics, as well as revising digraphs and trigraphs, we have been thinking about the effect of adding ‘un’ to words and about using words with ‘-ful’, ‘-ness’ and ‘-less’. Using commas, apostrophes and conjunctions are all ongoing topics in class. Reading remains a top priority. Please enjoy reading together at home from a wide range of  resources. The importance of this life skill and the impact it has on all of your child’s learning cannot be over-emphasised!

In maths this week we have enjoyed a focus on odd and even numbers, as well as revisiting the four operations to solve a range of problems. Next week we shall be learning more about addition; this will include work on measures. So please enjoy weighing, timing and measuring the length of different things at home to support this focus for our learning.

Our topic this half-term is Inventions. We have begun by looking at the ‘Wheel’. Thank-you for all of the wheeled objects that have come into school. We shall be considering significant inventions each week as well as planning, making and evaluating our own ideas for inventions. This focus will be supported by investigations into Materials. ‘Materials’ is our Science focus for this half-term.

Lastly, we are also looking at the seven continents and five oceans of the world! This week everyone had a go at drawing a simple world map and we did a good job. Anything linked with this focus at home will be great for helping us to make progress in our understanding!

Have a safe and happy weekend everyone.

With best wishes,

Catherine Thomas
