Here are a list of the exciting activities we have completed this week in Beech class…

On Monday, we used wax crayons and water paints. We explored what would happen if we painted over the wax crayons. We noticed that the paint would not dry over the wax crayon and so we could still see our names. We then used a white wax crayon. At first, we couldn’t see our name because the paper was white too. But once we painted over it, our name appeared as if by magic…

We then used this technique to create a simple Pop Art picture in the style of Andy Warhol. We used a repeating image (our names), with different vibrant and bright colours…

Next week, we are going to use the wax crayons to draw a picture of our toy. We will then paint over with water colours. Watch this space for more next week.

On Tuesday, we became book publishers. We have been busy writing our own stories and this process means lots of excellent writing (green highlighter) but also lots of editing and improving (purple pencil) and making mistakes (orange highlighter). Once we were happy with them, we wrote the stories in our best handwriting so that they looked more appealing for our reader. These will go up on display outside the classroom so others can see what excellent writers we are in Beech Class. We are very proud of our writing…

On Wednesday, we learnt and practiced different throwing techniques, focussing on throwing for distance. We used a range of throwing equipment, including small balls, big balls, heavy balls and light balls, and considered which technique would be best to use. One technique was a pull throw, where the ball starts behind our heads….

The other technique was a push throw, where the ball is in front of us…

On Thursday, we compared modern day toys to Victorian toys. We quickly discovered that actually, Victorian’s had similar toys to those we play with today but they may have improved or slightly changed over the years…

On Friday, we used our knowledge of halving shapes in order to help halve numbers. To do this, we drew a shape and halved it. Then we shared the number out between the two halves of our shape. We could then work out half and write a sentence to show this….

Reminder – Monday is the day you have all be waiting for…Junk Modelling Afternoon! We look forward to seeing you at around 1:30 to help us use a range of materials to make a model of our very own toy. Bring your creative skills with you. You will need to sign in at reception and get a visitors badge. We will send someone to collect you.

Notice – Thursday 23rd May is Beech Class assembly. We will be sharing all our fantastic learning about Toys and we would love to see as many of you there as possible. The assembly will start at 3pm.
